Train Your Dog To Sleep In His Own Bed

Today, I read an article titled "Is it safe to let sleeping dogs lie in your bed?" by Dogtime. In it, the author discussed about pet-to-person transmissible diseases like Chagas, Cat Scratch disease, and the notorious Bubonic plague. This made me recall the story my sister once shared with me about a colleague's story of Lyme disease.

Honestly, I really don't mind having my dog sleep on my bed. Chooey and Peanuts used to sneak up when I'm asleep. However, being asthmatic, having the dog in my room (but not beside me) is a more beneficial set-up on my part.

This pillow used to be mine...
Training your dog to sleep in his own bed can seem like an arduous task, especially when that cute little face is looking up at you. Therefore, it is better if you teach your dog to sleep on his own whilst he’s a puppy, as it can be harder with a more mature dog.

So, what are the benefits of bed training?
  • Some experts believe that it teaches your dog his place in the ‘pack’ or hierarchy in your home.
  • It trains your dog to be alone sometimes, and can guard against separation anxiety.
  • Your tiny puppy won’t stay small for long. Some breeds can grow to a huge size, and you could be the one with no space in your own bed!

First of all think about the type of bed you’d like. Choose one that your dog can grow into, as he will grow quickly. Smaller breeds and puppies do like to feel secure, so a round, donut type bed is a good idea. Make sure that there are no loose edges, or parts that could become loose and a choking hazard. Swell Pets has a variety of different beds you can look at for inspiration.

Since Asti doesn't like staying inside a crate, we opted for this type of round bed. It's made of plastic and easy to clean.

If you have an older dog, or one with joint or mobility issues, consider a heated bed. These can be ‘self-heated’ and work off the dog’s own body heat. Others are thermostatically controlled to a temperature just above the ambient room climate. The gentle warmth will soothe old bones, especially in the colder months.

Consider a crate too. More pet owners are using crates to give their dog a place of his own to sleep or just to rest. For puppies this can be a good idea to get them used to being alone and also to save your possessions from little teeth.

Training Time!

Before you begin training, remember to go at your pet’s own pace. This will give you the best result and cause the least stress for everyone.

Pop an old t-shirt of yours in the bed, this will add your smell to the bed. Also pop one of your dog’s toys in there too to add his scent. This will make the New Bed seem a much friendlier place.

Show your dog the bed and let him have a good sniff to acquaint himself. Then place it in the agreed place. This can be in your room, or on the landing nearby if that is better. Wherever you put it, make sure that it is a quiet place in the home that doesn’t have a lot of activity. It needs to be your dog’s retreat, so must be peaceful.

And if your dog is this cute, sometimes it's just too hard to say no.
My Female Dog Sleeping in My Bed by Rafel Miro, CC BY-ND 2.0
If he seems reluctant, pop a few treats in and around the bed. This will help him associate the bed as a positive place and somewhere he wants to be.

When it’s time for bed, simply take your dog to the bed and place him gently inside. Saying the word “Bed” each time will help him associate the word with the act.

Older pets can be taught to sleep in their own beds, although if they have spent years sleeping with you, this could take more time. Simply follow the steps above, and don’t give in!

This video has about 21 million views. It's about the smart pittie who takes advantage of his master's absence. I've seen this a couple of times already, so I definitely want to share it with you.

You may experience a few tiresome nights of taking your puppy or dog back to their bed, but the repeated action accompanied by positive words and lots of praise should soon have everyone sleeping soundly – in their own bed!

Mischief Master Class: A Case of Mistaken Doggy Identity

As we've mentioned earlier, we finally received our Mischief Master Class book. Yes, Chooey and Buchi... errr Peanuts... are famous.

Even in Snoopy's absence, this book is up to mischief! LOL

By the way, Peanuts is doing pretty well with my beau. This picture was taken last June when I visited her to see how my soul dog was. Apparently, I'm no longer her first love. She only allows pretty pictures when my beau holds the camera.

Curious Dog Peanuts on Camera for Family Friday

Finally! After 8 months of waiting for pictures and updates of my original pack, they remembered to send me some of the one and only PEANUTS!!! Remember Peanuts? She's my love-dog.

Am I crazy for thinking that this picture is so cute?
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Family Friday: Death and Rebirth

I had planned to talk about Caoimhe's passing a week ago. I felt guilty for not being there for Magic's mums and the entire pack during such a devastating ordeal.

Thank you for posting this in your blog, Magic.

I truly hope that their hearts have healed and mended after having to do that heart-wrenching decision.

On a more lighter note, still related to Magic, I have sewn Timothy the Turtle back to life. He was one of the first toys we ever got and coming from Magic, nonetheless.

He was ripped apart by Peanuts and Ginger a couple of months ago, so I took the liberty of  taking him with me so he can live a longer and happier life with Chooey.

Minus the squeaker, plus a couple of Frankenstein stitches and VIOLA! Timothy is ALIIIIVEEE!!!

Silly Saturday: Procrastinating on Awards... Again

So I've decided to finally finish what was due a long time ago. I have two awards and a lot of stories to share but unfortunately, no pictures to show.

Anyway, let's cut to the chase and get back to business. The first award would be the One Lovely Blog Award.

The requirements for the One Lovely Blog Award are:
  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to them in your post.
  • Share 7 things about yourself.
  • Nominate other bloggers you admire.
  • Contact your chosen bloggers to let them know.

The next award would be the...

The Beautiful Blogger Award requirements are:
  • To copy the Beautiful Blogger Award logo and place it in your post.
  • Thank the person who nominated you and create a link back to their blog.
  • Nominate 7 other bloggers for their own Beautiful Blogger Award.

First of all, we would like to thank Ian from Sheba's Life Story for these two wonderful awards. Forgive me for taking a long time to post it here.

Next, the seven things...

1. I love coffee. I have a habit of drinking cold coffee twice a day. My day feels incomplete without it.

2. My hobbies include watching Anime, Sci-Fi movies and TV series'. I am a big fan of Zombie movies, games and The Walking Dead. This all started when I first watched Resident Evil 1.

3. Chooey and Buchi are walking buddies on leash. Whitey simply follows us off-leash.

4. I miss Peanuts but I know she's in good hands. I asked for an update about her and the description given to me  was, "Her fur is green because she likes rolling over the grass and running all over the lawn.". I have yet to see how she looks like.

Awww, Peanuts! You're too smart for your own good.

5. I eat four meals a day. ^_^. Breakfast, lunch, snack time, dinner! The house I'm currently living in usually serves fish and vegetables, which is why I'm eating healthily right now.

6. The dog tricks Chooey knows are Sit, Up, Down, Bark, and Bang. Buchi knows Sit and Down while Whitey knows Sit  and Beg... Rin knows how to whine like she's talking.

7. According to my mom, Ginger, Coal and BD have grown fat. She wasn't aware she was feeding them too much. She thought the 2-3 cups of dog food was to be given every meal when it was meant for an entire day's consumption.

I would like to nominate the following awesome blogs. These bloggers are just some of my newest friends and I'd love to introduce them to everyone.

1. Susie and Sidebite. I have to admit, I hardly know what's in Susie's mind. I just love reading about them and seeing their Oh-So-Cute Scottie pictures.

2. Urbanhounds. This is one of the blogs where we can actually see who Mom and Dad are. All the little puglets, Bob, and Norby, of course, have such beautiful city adventures to share.

3. The Dougall Diaries. One of the newer family members of our blog community, Dougall and Floydie are such an adorable pair. The pictures in their blog are enough to give you a dose of doggy cuteness.

4. Scrappy of Yorkie Tails. IS A GIRL. Yes, dear friends, just like our adorable beloved Pip, Scrappy is also a Yorkie who is often mistaken for a little boy.

5. Fuzzy Tales. Even though I'm a dog lover, I do visit cat blogs, too. Nicki and Derry often post the best cat boxing/tussle/wrestling shots. That's enough to make my day.

6. Colby of Puppy in TrainingA lot of you are familiar with our puppy expert. If you need some puppy advice or are just in the mood of seeing many puppies wearing the cone of shame, his website is the place to go to!

And last but not the least...

7. Lisa of Dogs N Pawz. Dogs n Pawz is quite an informative site. It's a bloggy and webby combined. That said, I have to thank her for giving me the opportunity to read the Follow the Dog Home book I've reviewed recently.

Thanks again, Ian.

Sad Saturday: We Will See Each Other Again

I was hoping to minimize the sadness of the realization that I will have to separate Chooey and Peanuts by avoiding it for some while. As I've mentioned when we introduced Chooey into our pack, she is our temporary sister. The time has come that she will meet Buchi.

Chooey and Peanuts enjoying the day with a puppy visit.
On Tuesday, I will be leaving for my sister's. Unfortunately, it will be quite some while before Peanuts and I can reunite again.

Peanuts will be living with my beau, which to her advantage will spoil her rotten (allowing her to sleep on the bed and such). So don't be sad about Peanuts, she's actually in better hands than mine (without the flashy beast following her, too!).

It might be a couple of days before I can make a new post so please bear with me.

This Sunshine Award came from Sheba's Life Story.
I have received the Sunshine award from Ian and Sheba so I'd like to thank you at the bottom of my heart for this. I hope you don't mind me linking my old post on this one, Ian.

Mischief Monday: Procrastinating with Awards

Question: So Haopee, how many awards did you get before you decided to write this post?

Answer: A LOT!

List of Awards

First and foremost, I would like to thank each and every single being, human and pet alike who awarded these to me.

We have been awarded the Very Inspiring Blogger Award by Brando and Bogart, Dachshund Nola and Alison and Zoe from Pawfect Days.

The  Illuminating Blogger was given by Carolyn and Austin of Catachresis and Gronk and Izzie.

Lastly, the Sisterhood of the World Blogger Award! came from Poppy.

Two blogging awards (namely the Very Inspiring Blogger Award and the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award) had the same rules which required us to share 7 things about ourselves and pass it to 15 bloggers.

The Illuminating Blogger Award required us to share one interesting fact about ourselves and for it to be forwarded to 5 others. Due to short attention span constraints, we hope no one objects that the 1 fact and 5 bloggers are to be already included in the next segment of this VERY LONG POST.

With no further ado, we'd like to present our Creature Feature.

1. Haopee is a creature of coffee. This means that I'm willing to be paid in form of coffee beans and whipped cream.

2. Chooey is a creature of art. She dances in front of my mom to beg for food.

3. Peanuts is a creature of nature. When she hears commotion outside, she will scratch, whine and look at me hoping I'd let her out.

4. Ginger is a creature of food. She is food driven which means she can learn tricks faster than any of the dogs as long as she's rewarded with food.

5. Coal is a creature of noise. I seriously need to buy a pair of ear plugs. Coal doesn't bark-not once in his entire dog life, he only whines in this high pitched tone.

6. Brother Dog is a creature of fleas. Seriously, he still doesn't want us to touch him- or bathe him for that matter! He is the type who will only come close to his food when the coast is clear.

7. The last person in our creature feature is Haopee's Beau. Yes, you seldom hear about him but he exists. Haopee's Beau is a creature of patience. He puts up with all 6 of us.

Now, to distribute these wonderful awards to other bloggers, I would like to name 15 special bloggers who deserve them very much. And due to the fact that you may have receive these awards already, I would like to request that the rules be bent for the awardees to have the freedom to choose which of the three they prefer posting about.

1. Magic from Life in the Doghouse
2. Bella from Bringing Up Bella
3. Gronk and Izzie, the Two Toilet-Trained Kitties
4. Suka from Suka's Just Sayin
5. Nicki and Derry of Fuzzy Tales
6. Teddy and Sierra of Teddy's Tales
7. Molly the Wally and her Slog it, Blog it
8. Stewey of Stewey Unscene

One moment...Coffee and Sandwich Break ^_^. Kindly make yourselves at home with Peanuts intermission picture.

9. Sally, Luna and Charlie of It's a Weinerful Life
10. Oui Oui and Mica Minnie Moo of Twinkletoe Tails
11. Whisky, Tortie, Tutu and the Entire Crew of The Furries of Whispy
14. Dougall of The Dougal Diaries
15. Lastly, Cotton from A Tale on Cotton The Rescue Dog

Any questions? Violent reactions? No?

Good! Here, have a cookie!

Silly Saturdays: Pressies and Dog Show Teaser

Dear Bloggy Friends,

Once again, I would like to thank everyone who has visited our page. We have been quite busy. This week, I  got sick and I also found time to attend the 139th to 144th Iloilo Kennel Club, Inc. All Breed Championship Dog Show... which I took so many pictures of (all of which where defective except for a couple of ones I am able to salvage with the help of Photoshop).

So now, let us start with what my other beloved sister has sent me. Pressies!!! Not for me... but for the pack.

Two bottles of Angel Drops Vitamins and our first Kong AirDog Toys!!!
Angel Drops Calcium Aid was given to Peanuts while she was a growing puppy. I guess it must be one of reasons why she's so TALL. She's supposed to be a JRT and Min Pin mix but she's taller than Ginger! Peanuts looks more like a Greyhound-bodied Terrier-looking dog rather than a Miniature Pinscher Mix.

What about the Kong Toys? Did they like it? You be the judge.

Peanuts even had the guts to take Chooey's squeakers!
And for our teaser of Iloilo Kennel Club, Inc. All Breed Championship Dog Show... allow me to present this picture... WITHOUT THE DOGS.

Iloilo Kennel Club, Inc. 139th to 144th  All Breed Championship Dog Show
The dog show pictures will probably make a good mischief Monday post because they were all really really bad.

Silly Saturday: Chooey's First Bath

Before we start everything else. we would like to mention Pedigree in their new cause.

Have you joined Pedigree's program "Write a Post, Help A Dog"? If not, here's how it goes: from now until midnight on June 30th, for every blog post that mentions Write a Post, Help a Dog, Pedigree will donate one 17lb bag of dog food to shelter dogs in need! It's so easy, everyone should do it!

Thank you for your patience, dear bloggy friends. We are still recovering our data from the damaged hard drive partitions. I, Haopee, have been staying up until 4 AM in the morning doing this.

In the mean time, please enjoy this adorable pack sibling photo.

I have documented Chooey's first bath. After 3 months of being smelly Chooey, now she is known as  LESS smelly Chooey and everybody wants a piece of her- even Peanuts.

Have a wonderful weekend. I will do my best to visit you guys soon.

Partially Wordy Wednesday

After spending 2 hours figuring out how to use GIMP, I was able to add some texts in this picture. I just realized how much I suck at it and miss using Photoshop.

Give me that steak in the picture box. I command you!
News Flash: My Windows 7 is damaged again. I'm still unable to fix it so please bear with me. I might not be able to visit you guys until my Microsoft OS gets "medicated". I'm thankful that I have Linux Ubuntu at the moment.

Family Friday with our Jerhigh Treats

A week ago, I finally got new treats for the pack to enjoy. At first I was hesitant to pick the Liver Browny flavored Jerhigh Dog Snack because I do feed them real boiled liver and they might not like it compared to the real thing.

Dear Jerhigh, will you make my dogs as happy as the doggy in your picture?

Do you think Chooey likes them?

Noms! Om, Nom, Om, Nom. Nom!
How about Peanuts?

"Bask on my terrier charms, Haopee!"

The verdict:
Chooey: Don't you think you've starved us long enough? It's about time we got the "goods".
Peanuts: Yes, we love it. Super Duper Hugs!

Apparently, I worry too much about the dogs not liking the treats. I'm glad Jerhigh is now happily resting in their content tummies.

10 Noisy Dog Breeds (featuring Chooey & Peanuts)

So we've missed Mischief Monday, eh? Hear our vocal protest. Be my guest... PLAY THE CLIP.

Below is an interesting list of the top 10 Noisiest Dog Breeds... and guess what, terriers (*cough* PEANUTS) are in it.

In no specific order, the 10 noisiest dog breeds are...

1. Terriers

Peanuts: What do you mean I'm noisy?!? It's Chooey's fault!
Chooey: (looking innocently)
Peanuts: Stop pretending. You know you're guilty, too.
Chooey: (looking innocently)
Peanuts: That's not fair! Haopee, make her confess.
Chooey: (still...looking innocently)

2. Collie - Bragging rights for being too smart?

3. Doberman Pinscher - That's understandable. They were meant to alarm us when an intruder comes. We should give them credit for independently practicing their vocal chords.

4. Finnish Spitz - I haven't seen this breed yet.

5. German Shepherd Dog - Should I say more? They're supposed to intimidate like number 3.

6. Norwegian Elkhound - Ummmm....

7. Toy and Miniature Poodle - Looking pretty isn't enough. They have to talk about it, too.

8. Beagle - "This looks interesting... Oh, there's another interesting thingy there! Wait, there's one more over there! And another one over over there! Bark! Bark! Bark!"

9. Rottweiller - "I bark because I'm tough and everybody's too scared to say 'NO'. Bite me... and I'll bite you back."

10. Shetland Sheepdog - "Humans are too disorganized. I have to herd them everyday but they never pay attention. Verbal cues are the only thing that works. I always need to bark at them to gather around."

The list was taken from Planet Dog's doglopedia. However, the comments and descriptions are ours alone. I hope you've enjoyed this post.

Word...errr Wednesday: The Ocean is Under Our Home

This is where we currently live. During days where we have a high tide, the river overflows towards our home.

Our house is elevated because when it was built, my mom didn't have enough finances to spend on land filling. Truth be told, I often enjoy watching the sea water around our tiny home. Good thing it only comes  twice or thrice a month.

Happy Word...ummm Wednesday!

Mischief Monday: We ain't BAD, We Angels!

Thankfully, not much mischief here... In fact, don't they look peaceful? This is just one of those days that I am able to relax from the sound of bickering and whiny battle cries.

Painting Title: Chooey Reaching Out

I'm not sure if I diminished the value of this picture by Photoshopping it. They remind me of a mural so I did the next best thing- changing the wooden floor into a brick-looking wall.

Happy Monday, Mischief Makers!

Wordy Wednesday: The Way of the Ninja... Dog

The words used in this post are solely for descriptive purposes. I was a little late for the Mischief Monday Bloghop. LOL.

In a land close to bed, there lived a powerful yet tiny female ninja. She lived in her ninja hideout that was disguised as a hole in the sofa.

An eager student approached her asking to be taught the way of the ninja. This big white student was clumsy. Her ninja stealth wasn't stealthy at all.

The little master taught her to concoct potions for their next mission. But to the master's dismay, it was her student who got knocked out by the sleeping potion.

The student was not willing to give up yet. So she asked her master to give her a second chance. They trained day and night.

Finally, the master was satisfied with her student's hard work. She decided to pass her the secret technique of the ninja.

After more years of rigorous training, the student  had become an expert in all the ninja trades her master taught her. The final test was a battle between her and her master. In the end, she defeated the tiny master and thus the student has become the master.

Saturday Servings: Doggie Revenge or Something Else?

You must be wondering what Peanuts has been up to with the couch... Well, here's catching her in the act.

Is this your evil plot of revenge, Peanuts? Or should I expect something else?

Sister helping sister. I find out that dear little Chooey is the mastermind of torturing the couch.

My computer is currently under the weather. I'm not sure if it's a terminal sickness or something a total reformat could fix. So please bear with me if I haven't visited your bloggies.

Yesterday, it malfunctioned for 4 hours. After doing a boot repair, I went on my business for an hour and it showed the Blue Screen of Death again. Then it malfunctioned again. :(

Now, it's fixed. But I don't know for how long. Sigh.

Mischief Monday: The Story of the Couch

In a land, far far away, there was a dog who loved her couch. She sat on it, slept on it, and even chewed on it to make it hers.

An evil Haopee took the couch and gave it to a person in need- the couch's original owner.

The little dog felt something was wrong with her couch. She smelled it and smelled it again but her scent wasn't as strong as it was before... something was wrong!

With Sherlock Holmes' deductive reasoning, the little dog discovered the truth about the couch... IT WASN'T HERS!!!

She kept her cool and pretended to love it. Bent on revenge, she tricked her owner to believing that she was happy with it.
