Dog Adoption in Marikina City, Philippines

Pet adoption from dog pounds in the Philippines isn't something most people are aware of.
Drop by the Marikina City Veterinary Office Impounding Area if you're planning to add a dog in your family.
Did you know that you could adopt a pet from Marikina CVO's Impounding Area? According to Marikina City's website, pet adoption is best done during Fridays.

Did you know that the average cost of adoption there is at 500 php?
Did you also know that there are a lot of dogs there hoping to find their forever home? In fact, I've found a few purebred ones still waiting for someone to get them. Last I checked, there was a German Shepherd Pup, a chocolate brown Poodle and a Chow-chow who's just dying to get a chance on a second life.

Before you decide to buy from a breeder or a pet store, please don't forget to drop by your local pound.
But that's not the only interesting dog being kept in the Marikina City Veterinary Office Impounding Area, we also found a white (or cream colored) beauty who just stands up and wags its tail whenever a stranger approaches it. I couldn't explain the expression in that dog's eyes. I'm calling him/her Tuesday because that's when they caught him/her.

Now that you know... Before you go browsing through online websites for cute adorable purebreds and mixed breds, drop by your local pound. You might be surprised with what you may find.

A lot of people have posted their rants about Marikina's way of impounding dogs. Before you post your complaints, I suggest you read RA 9482: The Anti-Rabies Act, this article from PAWS titled My Dog is Taken to the Pound. Is this legal?, and a list of Philippine some local pounds around Metro Manila.

    3. If you're looking for a good Rottie breed with papers, your best bet is to drop by PCCI. They have an activity center down at the Marikina Valley Medical Center. You can also go to Cartimar Pet Centre.

But before that, I suggest you drop by the Marikina CVO Impounding Area to check out their available adoptables.

  5. I'm still not sure how I feel about these rescues. I mean, I want to help all animals, and I'm glad someone is helping these, but I often feel bad that we are importing rescues when dogs here are still being put down regularly. It's a hard situation all around. :-(

An ideal world would be every dog has a home, wouldn't it?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Kung ganyan po yung pagkakaintindi nyo, it's up to you. However, you should also consider that there are people who get accidentally bitten and animals that get into road accidents. Animal control is there for a reason. Also, alam naman natin na strict yung Marikina when it comes to sanitation and orderliness of things.

Ako, I'm just saying na merong pound yung Marikina and people can actually adopt dogs from there. Don't you think people deserve to be aware of such option?

    2. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/390451/pet-owners-defy-marikina-ban

Back when the government was under Bayani Fernando, a lot of the dogs around our village were caught. Some of them weren't even registered so others had to pay 2,500 while others simply decided to leave their dogs in the pound.

FYI, this blog is in no way affiliated with Marikina's CVO. To be honest, I think di dapat nila hinuhuli yung mga asong nakatali kasi inaalagaan naman ng tama. At dapat talaga, RESPONSIBLE pet owners should stand up for what they believe is right.

This is not about Marikina alone... different pounds are located in the Philippines. Just because yung nakapost dito is about Marikina, doesn't mean it's the only pound out there.

As for the resettlement area, ang masaklap dun ay di pinapaadopt yung pets galing resettlement areas. So if you think "binebenta" nga yung galing sa resettlement, you're wrong (meaning they're either euthanized or will be living their entire lives sa pound).

Nagbabahay-bahay sila, Pag may narinig silang tumahol na aso, hahanapin nila yung certificate of registration or dog tag. Pag wala, either kukunin nila ang dog or titicketan ka nila.
P75 lang magparegister ng dog, May anti-rabies na, Be a resposible owner... It will only take 10mins. para iparegister.
Kaya may adoption fee is because sinaksakan na nila ito, pinakain, at inalagaan.

    1. Thank you for further elaborating my explanation.

I agree. 75Php goes a long way particularly for anti-rabies shots. If you brought your dog to the vet, it'd cost 180-250php for said shot. And if a dog bit someone, di bababa sa 10k yung human anti-rabies shots na babayaran ng owner pag hindi napa-anti rabies yung aso.

I remember nung nagchecheck sila ng mga houses. We were given a ticket. It's just a warning to have your dog registered. Hindi naman nakafine kaagad yung hindi pagparegister then and there.

Dogs shouldn't be tied up, left in cages to sleep where they poop, or exposed to the elements outside. I love dogs, I have had dogs for most of my life and I stumbled upon this blog while searching for adoptables. If you left your dog tied outside, alone, exposed to the sun and to evil people who get their kicks from throwing stones at or feeding poison to dogs, you are not a good owner and your dog should be taken away from you. And please never bother to get a dog again.

A dog entails a LIFELONG COMMITMENT. you are responsible for your dog in all ways. They need to have adequate nutrition, regular trips to the vet for vaccinations, deworming, and heartworm medication, regular grooming, and lots of love. Ganyan sa LAHAT ng aso, from aspin to Old English Sheepdog.

In my neighborhood, there is a street littered with dog poop all the time, thanks to irresponsible owners who either let their dogs roam the streets on their own or let their dogs outside to poop and don't clean up after them. This is the street that my son and I walk on every day when I take him to school. Diseases come from dog poop. My vaccinated dog got PARVO from the dog poop left behind by irresponsible owners. He died, kahit bakunado. My family was heartbroken, we still are. We also had to pay more than 14 thousand pesos in vet bills because of these irresponsible dog owners. The dog owners here even leave their dogs outside and lock their gates at high noon with no water or food. Kawawa ang doggy; he paid for his owners' neglect and for the fact that his owners never bothered to train/socialize him.

That's partly why stray dogs and dogs improperly cared for by their owners are impounded. To make sure the streets stay safe for humans and dogs alike. Wish ko lang na mas madaming requirements to own any kind of dog. And it is a sad fact, but a fact nevertheless: if you can't afford a dog's needs, don't get one. Kaya nagantay ako ng 2 years para magaso ulit kasi alam ko na kailangan ko tugunan ang needs nya for the rest of his life.

Sorry for the rant, some of the comments here are majorly upsetting, ignorant, and defensive.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hello po, sir. No, your rant is spot on. Mahirap mag turo ng responsible pet ownership sa lahat especially given the living conditions of most of us. Maraming nagtatanong bakit ganyan, bakit ganun.

I fully agree with you in saying na dogs are not supposed to be chained or caged. And there should be no buts in that. If I had my way, i don't believe that it's enough to allow the dog to roam around the premises of your home. Kailagan talaga ng aso ng proper exercise at vet care. At the least, kailangan nila ng proper care (including their hygienic needs) para at a minimum ang vet visits.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I lost a good dog sa Parvo. Four years ago, I lacked the knowledge in caring for my dog. Heck, I didn't even know what Parvo was back then. I saw my puppy rasp for her breath, heave and cough out blood. Askal man yun, she was my dog and I allowed it to happen because of my ignorance. Last year, I almost lost another mutt to Parvo. We spent 7000 for his hospitalization. Fortunately, he recovered and is still alive and healthy.

As for the poop.

I am sorry to hear about your neighborhood. Although I know we are a long way in following the ideal care of our canine charges, I think education, rantings like this and persistent reminding will go a long way. So, wag po kayong magpa-anonymous. Nasa tamang lugar naman kayo.

They also have adoptables.

  23. These are not rescued animals, these dogs were taken away from their owners and ransomed for P500 bucks. Tama ba gawain ng marikina pound? Duh.! If they cared, they should just issue a ticket penalizing the pet owner. Imagine to pay there and rent transpo to get back your pet? Just get anothet one from a friend.

    1. Just get anothet one from a friend.<--- Is this your way of saying that dogs are also living and breathing animals that deserve a second chance for a good home?

You are generalizing the dogs that are impounded. Most of them are not rescued animals. Some were impounded, taken from the streets, and caught due to their owner's irresponsibility. A lot have been removed from relocation centers. They were torn away from families that took care of them. Nakakalungkot man sabihin but that's the harsh truth. That's why I posted this-- kasi maraming nanghihingi ng puppies, namimili sa petshop, eh marami dun sa pound-- yung nakakulong lang ng habang buhay or end up getting euthanized.

Is it overboard? Yes! Do I like it? No! May magagawa ba tayo? Yes, we could complain about it-- petition to have it removed.

For now, it's our duty to follow the rules. We don't have to like it to live with it.

      Delete
    2. I don't think its too much for the City Government of Marikina to disallow people from the relocation areas to have dogs. The city invested a lot in developing those areas to get rid of informal settlers, one of the biggest achievements of the city. Kumbaga, their house, their rules. I don't see this as any different from condos or apartments that don't allow pets.

  25. Hi,

We're Peterson PeƱamante and Sugar Gollena a couples from Muntilupa City. We are willing to adopt a dog. We think that if we adopt a dog we will have a closer relationships, are more satisfied in relationships and respond better to stress than couples not have. It's an opportunity to take care of a living thing without taking on the major responsibilities of having children. Taking care of a puppy/dog or other pet together can either serve as practice for having kids or teach you that you don't actually ever want to procreate.
When you're taking care of a puppy as a couple, it distracts you from petty relationship problems and brings you closer together. With a puppy, you don't feel as lonely when your partner is out of town or off to work.

We are here to offer them our:
    -Happy Home
-Our Bowl & cozy bed, soft pillows and all our toys
-Our lap, play and cuddle wich we loved so much
-Our hand that stroked his/her fur & sweet voice wich spoke it's name
-And all the love the we've had

A lot of dogs are living in animal shelters and are in need of care. By adopting a puppy, we'll be doing a good deed together.

    Respectfully Yours,
    Peterson PeƱamante

    1. Hi Peterson, forgive me if I have given the wrong impression that we are a rescue center. I think you'd be a good candidate to adopt--better than most, actually. Believe it or not, if you're planning to adopt from the pounds, it's a lot easier. Sadly, they don't do much filtering on the potential parents' history.

Nonetheless, since you did mention your willingness to adopt, you should try checking out CARA's website or PAWS website (it's on the upper right corner of my screen).

If Marikina isn't so far (and believe me, there are a lot of dogs who would want to be taken home there), you could try visiting the Marikina City Veterinary Office pound.

  32. I really agree with you. I remember the poor dogs we rescued from Muntinlupa Dog Pound! Those dogs were only a few days or hours away from their scheduled euthanasia. After we rescued them, almost half of them died of Parvo. As it turned out, they're already sick even before we moved to release them.

Probable reason? It's because of the pound's condition and the way they treat the dogs there!

So please people, instead of buying dogs from pet stores, adopt dogs from these pounds. Just imagine the lives you'll be able to save!
