Up until now, I still feel guilty for not being true to my word. As you all know, I am an advocate of adoption, spaying and neutering. However, I myself have made one of the most irresponsible mistakes.... I wasn't able to keep Chooey from getting pregnant and at such a young age :(.

Three months ago, we brought her to the vet to have her check-up and the vet confirmed that she was pregnant. As the vet looked at me, she told me that it's ironic how most owners would want to get their dogs pregnant while I didn't look happy about it.

Obviously, I did a great job steering Humping Shih Tzu (Buchi) away from Chooey. But then, I forgot about Whitey. So, not only did Chooey get ticks from the evil white dog but a bunch of... cute...adorable... smart... puppies (awwwww moment). China (the one on the left) is a super fast learner in potty training.
Good news is they're all boys so pregnancy won't be a problem. And as irresponsible as that may have sounded, I do plan to have them fixed. The Cone of Shame WILL visit us!
Furthermore, there was no doubt that we were keeping all of them. And we even added another rescued member into our pack (to be featured next time).

Oh oh. Your doggy family is certainly growing! Have you set the date for Chooey's spay? :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could. I want all the female dogs to be spayed (boys will be neutered as well!)as soon as possible. But saving for it isn't an easy task. It will take more than my entire month's salary just to have spaying done to all of them. It's hard when the entire pack isn't mine. :(

Ah, these things happen. The real problem is with people propagating dogs via puppy mills. You are taking responsibility and keeping them.

ReplyDeleteYes. It's funny. That's because dogs with breeds are still highly sought after in our country. Even mixed breeds are being sold online -.- (which I know isn't a good thing either).
DeleteHeck, spaying and neutering are two expensive veterinary services because it's not a typical procedure unlike in the US.

It is such an easy thing to happen - my mother's Fox Terrier once jumped over a 7 foot brick wall to go and get herself pregnant, none of us could believe it!

Thank you. I am somewhat confused as well. I feel caught in a situation that I have no whatsoever control as my sister's pack are all intact. It's not an easy task to keep tabs to all of them.

Definitely major mischief. As much as I am tempted to have more Chooey mini-me's, I'm not crazy. Having a large pack is (whether all of them are mine or not) is a handful.

Uh oh! Sorry to hear this happened before you were able to get Chooey fixed! But my oh my, those puppies are CUTE, and we're happy you're going to keep them all. We know they will be well-loved. :)
ReplyDeleteWe are glad you are keeping those little cuties, but even male dogs should be neutered so they don't cause, um, problems. You did your best to prevent it, so don't beat yourself up. Its ok! You never know, some good may come of it! Here are some purrs for you to feel better!

The pups are here now and you are doing the responsible thing...except spay AND neuter (you would not want some other female cutie to have the same "oops"). Just love your growing family and don't beat yourself up, it took a lot to "confess" and now move on.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your words. It means a lot to me. I've been beating myself about it because I am not yet able to afford spaying and neutering. When you are responsible for 10 dogs (majority of which aren't yours), the mind goes into a chaotic state. I just don't know where to start.

ReplyDeleteIndeed. I used to have 5 dogs. Now I am responsible for more. My sister's pack is part of them and she had 5 to start with. My brother-in-law picked up a stray in the process, so that makes 3 new members including Chooey's pup.
DeleteI wish I could honestly say that I can handle all of this alone, but I just can't. Fortunately, my sister is learning as well.
I'm always conflicted when people say "oops, accidents happen" when it comes to a dog getting pregnant. Yes, accidents happen when dog owners don't do the responsible thing by having their animals sterilized. Hell, getting them sterilized reduces the chances of cancer, anyway. It's win-win.

ReplyDeleteYes, Spencer's dad is ok with this. He contacted the Tabby Cat Club (of which we are members) looking for help. Purrsonally, we think its really lousy that a nice (and older) animal has to find another home because other animals are less than friendly. When one adopts an animal it is supposed to be a lifetime commitment. Too bad he couldn't work out a better solution. We hope Spencer will find a good home this time.
