Doggy Proposed Vaccination Schedule and Tests

Since the last three posts were mostly about rabies, I'd like to end these series with a more detailed guide schedule for vaccinations approved by the Veterinary Practitioner Association of the Philippines & Philippine Animal Hospital Association.

3 weeks old- Deworming

6 weeks old- Canine Parvovirus (1st Shot) and Deworming

2 months old- Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Para-influenza (2nd Shot. They usually come in 5-in-1 or 6-in-1 vials) and Deworming

11 weeks old- Booster Dose (3rd Shot) and Deworming

3 months old-  Anti-Rabies, 6-in-1 and Deworming

5 months old- Heartworm Test and Ehrlichia Test

9 months old- Anti-Rabies (2nd dose. With street dogs, we only this once a year.) and 6-in-1

Annually- Immunization against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo-virus and para-influenza, Anti-Rabies and Deworming

Lyme-disease is pretty rare in the Philippines. In fact, I haven't heard of dogs having such cases. However, Leptospirosis vaccination is a must as we are prone to floods during rainy seasons.

Most purebreds being sold in the country have already had their first shots and deworming done.

  1. Wow that's a lot of shots! In the states it varies from vet to vet but this is what our vet gives:

3 DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) 'puppy shots'. Recommended to be given every 3-4 weeks in between. Starting at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and a final one at 16 weeks. Those are considered core, all the others like leptospirosis and Lyme all depend on your geographical location in the states. Rabies I believe is usually given at 12 weeks. Heartworm and Deworming are not mandatory. Yuki was dewormed 8 weeks just as a precaution, we don't think she had worms. We knew Rocket had worms and was dewormed at 10 weeks and again 13 weeks, since the vet said the first time its done it gets them out of the intestines and the second time it's ti flush what's left out of the liver. We are recommended to put them on heartgaard at 8 weeks and asked at their 1 year booster if they want to be tested for heartworm. At their 1 year exam they are given the DAPP booster that
lasts 3 years, and if you get your appointment 1 week before they are due for their rabies, you qualify for the 3 year booster. If you come later, than you only qualify for the one year booster.

  2. Wow, I suppose deworming is not necessary since the breeders and shelters there already do the initial deworming.

Here in the Philippines, vaccination isn't necessary actually, only the anti-rabies one if the city requires dog registration.

There's no mandatory law for the other "shots" unless you bring your dogs to the vet. Even then, the vets won't require you such but will only recommend it.

  3. I need help. I have a 4 months shih tzu female puppy. She is already vaccinated of 9 in 1 in her previous vet. Now with her new vet her vaccine schedule are this:

    Redeworming
    6 in 1 vaccine
    5 in 1 vaccine
    Antirabies
    Bronchicine
    Heartworm preventation

Are the vaccines right for shih tzu? isn't 5 in 1 and 6 in 1 almost the same? Help please.

    1. I am surprised that there is such a thing as a 9 in 1 here in the Philippines. I would never have allowed that kind of vaccination especially since recently a friend of mine had her schnauzer euthanized because of the brain damaged the dog got from adverse reaction.

First thing's first,Deworming is necessary every 3 months for the first year ata. 5 in 1 vaccine or 6-in-1, okay lang yun basta give it two weeks kasi that's what the books says. However, sabi ng vet namin dati, okay lang naman kahit every 10 days pa sya (pero prefer ko 2 weeks). Usually kasi yung Parvo vaccine separated yun from the the others.

Anti-rabies kung maari wag isama sa vaccine pero yung malalaki kong aso, 5-in-1 (2nd shot) and Anti-rabies were given during the same session.
